Responsible Gambling
Gambling is a form of entertainment, not a source of income. The moment fun turns into a burden, walking away is the strongest bet you can make.
Four Core Principles
- Bet only with money you can afford to lose. Never use living expenses, loans, or other people's money.
- Set limits in advance and stick to them. Decide a daily / weekly / monthly deposit limit before you start.
- Don't try to chase your losses. 'Recovery betting' is the most common pattern that turns losses into bigger losses.
- Don't bet when your judgment is impaired. Avoid playing while drinking, sleep-deprived, or emotionally upset.
Self-assessment — How many of these apply to you?
The following items are simplified versions of questions commonly used in problem-gambling self-assessment scales (e.g. PGSI).
- Q1.Have you bet more than you could really afford to lose?
- Q2.Do you find yourself betting larger amounts to feel the same level of excitement?
- Q3.Have you tried to cut back or stop betting without success?
- Q4.Do you feel restless or depressed when you are not gambling?
- Q5.Have you used gambling to escape uncomfortable feelings (depression, anxiety, guilt)?
- Q6.Have you returned the next day to try to win back what you lost?
- Q7.Have you lied to family or friends about your gambling?
- Q8.Have you borrowed money or sold assets to fund gambling?
- Q9.Has gambling caused problems with your work, studies, or relationships?
Indicative interpretation- 1–2 items: caution stage — set limits and take a break
- 3–5 items: at-risk stage — pause betting and consider professional counselling
- 6 or more: possible gambling addiction — seek help immediately from a specialist organization
